Volunteer opportunities

It takes the effort and dedication of many volunteers to accomplish our mission of rescuing dogs to free people. The second chance at life that FSD gives unwanted, abandoned dogs would not be possible without these wonderful people. Are you ready for the most rewarding volunteer opportunity of your life? Foster parent
Foster Parents take dogs less than 18 months of age into their homes and provides basic obedience, manners, and socialization under the guidance of FSD trainers. After the foster team passes a public access test, they earn their “Service Dog in Training” cape and are able to enter restricted public places. To learn more about this position, please download the Foster Parent Application Package. Position requires completion of FSD Handlers Class and completion of Foster Parent Application.

Weekender
Weekenders take a dog home on the weekend to teach house and car manners, basic obedience, and to help socialize dogs. Additionally, they prepare dogs-in-training to pass AKC’s Canine Good Citizen test. This volunteer opportunity is ideal for someone who loves dogs, but whose work/life schedule prevents them from being a full-time owner. Position requires completion of FSD Handlers Class and completion of Handlers Application.

Home-schooler
Home-schoolers take a dog that has been accepted into the training program into their home for one month and begins teaching house and car manners, basic obedience, crate training and socialization. Home-schoolers also take dogs further in training that may be showing signs of kennel stress or need more one-on-one training. Position requires completion of FSD Handlers Class and completion of Handlers Application.

Outing handler
Outing handlers works with dogs on public outings with trainers. (Evening outings are Monday from 6:30-8:30pm). You may find yourself on a trip to a local restaurant, shopping mall or grocery store! Position requires completion of FSD Handlers Class and completion of Handlers Application.

Weekend walker/playtime supervisor
Weekend walker and playtime supervisors walk and play with dogs that stay at FSD for the weekend. There are three walking shifts available 8 am, 3 pm and 9pm. Position requires completion of FSD Handlers Class and completion of Handlers Application.

Weekend trainer
Weekend trainers train FSD dogs according to the FSD training curriculum. Position requires completion of FSD Handlers Class and completion of Handlers Application.

Shelter scout
Shelter scouts visit shelters once or twice weekly to locate potential candidates for the FSD service dog training program. Shelter scouts conduct the initial temperament evaluations, and notify the office of candidates. Position requires the FSD shelter class and completion of Shelter Scout Application.

General
General volunteer opportunities include assisting in the FSD office, grant writing, public demonstrations, fundraising, administrative support, writing articles for our newsletter, and much more. Please call our office for more information and complete our General Volunteer Application.
